Why He Pulls Away When Things Get Serious
Commitment, pace, stress and compatibility can all affect relationship closeness.
Start with what changed
Distance is a pattern, not a diagnosis. Notice what changed: frequency of contact, warmth, plans, affection, responsiveness or willingness to discuss the relationship. One quiet day is different from a sustained shift.
Several explanations can fit the same behavior
Stress, uncertainty about the relationship, a need for autonomy, conflict avoidance, mismatched pace, attachment-related habits or declining interest can all look like withdrawal. You usually cannot identify the cause from distance alone.
Respond to the pattern, not the story in your head
Avoid escalating contact just to reduce uncertainty. Give the situation enough room to become clear, then use a direct, low-pressure conversation. Ask about the change you observed rather than telling the other person what they must be feeling.
Look for reciprocity
Healthy repair requires participation from both people. Pay attention to whether your partner communicates, follows through and works with you. A relationship cannot be stabilized by one person doing all of the interpreting and adjusting.
